Preparing for the IELTS exam - FAQs

How should I practice for the test?

Cambridge practice books are readily available online in PDF formats.

You will also be receiving your copy of the IELTS practice book as soon as you register for the examination.

Also make sure you read these solved answers:

What is the ideal timing for each module?

Generally, you get 60 minutes in each module.

The Listening module is of 40 minutes in total - 30 minutes of listening and 10 minutes for transferring your answers to the answer sheet.

In the Reading module, you have 60 minutes to solve three unseen passages. Try to finish all three as soon as possible and give yourself time to review your answers.

In the Writing module, you have 60 minutes for two tasks. Try to divide your time as 20 minutes for Task 1 and 40 minutes for Task 2.

The Speaking module is a one-to-one personal interview. It should generally take 15-20 minutes. The speaking test may happen a day prior or later to your exam or may occur even on the same evening.

What stationery items should I carry?

Your stationery items should ideally include:

2 pens, 3 pencils, 1 eraser, 1 sharpener, 1 scale

IMPORTANT! - Avoid bringing a brand new (sealed/unopened) pen or pencil for the exam. I recommend you test the pen beforehand and sharpen all three pencils well in advance.

Moreover, during the exam, if your pencil's lead breaks while writing, grab the second pencil and continue writing. YOU DON'T HAVE SPARE TIME TO WASTE!

What are the requirements at the examination hall?

Before allowing you to enter your examination hall, you are required to display your Passport for identification.

IMPORTANT! You MUST have your original Passport at the time of your examination.

What should I take to the examination hall?

Practically, just three things!

  • Your stationery should be in your hand. No boxes are allowed.
  • Your original Passport.
  • A photocopy of the letter stating your Candidate Number.
