Q33. Task 2 - Essay Topic (Question and Solution)

In many countries children are engaged in some kind of paid work. Some people regard this as completely wrong while others consider it as valuable work experience, important for learning and taking responsibility.
What are your opinions on this?

In this modern era, more and more children are working to facilitate their expenses or just get some extra pocket money. Whether this exposure is beneficial for their practical life or not is an ongoing debate. In my opinion, paid jobs have their own merits and demerits based on the following reasons.

First of all, most children who start with low salaried odd jobs such as floor mopping, dish washing, catering to guests in restaurants or practicing in workshops develop an appreciation for labor and its associated rewards. This results in better control and spend of their own hard earned money, wisely. Secondly, the work they perform boosts their learning by providing new skills and practical work exposure. Furthermore, this helps them become responsible adults, capable of financially supporting their own families.

On the other hand, students who work are left with little time and/or energy to concentrate in school and finish their assignments. Many become dropouts since a steady supply of income, even though low, looks more appealing than continuing with education for several more years. This, in turn, affects society since a chunk of high potential skills and abilities are lost due to lack of proper education. Few earning children also develop bad habits due to peer pressure and the availability of disposable income.

In brief, such work experience boosts confidence and instills a sense of responsibility in most children and with the proper parental guidance and schooling, its negative impact can be outweighed by its benefits.
