IELTS Task 1 - Line Chart: Canadian fast food consumption

The given graph shows the consumption of fast food in Canada (per week) from 1970 to 1990.

Write a report for a university lecturer making comparisons where relevant and report the main features.

The polyline graph portrays the changes in fast food consumed in Canada between 1970 and 1990. The data is calibrated in grams.

From an overall perspective, it is apparent that in 1970, pizza was the most popular fast food with a consumption of over 300g per week. By 1990, however, consumption dropped by 33%. However, consumption of other fast foods such as fish & chips and hamburgers significantly increased. The amount of fish & chips eaten shot up from about 80g a week to a whopping 500g, overtaking pizza by 1983.

Moving further, accompanying this change in the choice of foods was an increase in the overall amount of fast-food consumed. In 1970, Canadian consumers ate approximately 450g a week of fast food. In 1990, on the other hand, this had more than doubled, to 1000g.

In conclusion, fast food consumption has steadily increased since 1970, and fish & chips have become the primary choice.
